CHICAGO, July 23, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — VelocityEHS®, the global leader in enterprise EHS & ESG software solutions, celebrates the industrial ergonomics success of Carhartt, an apparel company specializing in heavy-duty workwear. Through a dedicated workplace safety initiative, Carhartt reduced OSHA recordables by over 50 percent over a 24-month period at three of its manufacturing facilities in Kentucky and Tennessee.

To protect its 1,200 associates from injuries caused by forceful exertions, poor postures, and repetitive movements—risk factors for developing musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs)—Carhartt established a proactive ergonomics-based approach. In 2022, the company implemented the Velocity Industrial Ergonomics at its Irvine, KY, facility, extending the initiative to Camden, TN, in 2023 and Edmonton, KY, in 2024.

Carhartt was drawn to VelocityEHS for its AI-assisted assessment capabilities embedded in its Industrial Ergonomics solution and the expert support from its team of board-certified ergonomists. The AI assessment technology was first introduced to the marketplace by Humantech, a pioneer in ergonomics consulting and software. Velocity acquired Humantech in 2017, and increased investment in AI and Machine Learning (ML) leading to additional patented breakthroughs, like its new 3-dimensional (3D) model for motion capture.

“The AI-driven assessments capability was something we hadn’t seen before, and we wanted to lean into this technology to further advance our practices and safety program,” said Ashley Arvin, Safety Specialist, at Carhartt. Scott Harper, U.S. Safety Manager added “The training and the AI-driven assessments checked two of the boxes. We also have the expert support we need with the Velocity team. We knew the ergonomics program would be a success because Velocity wasn’t going to let us fail.”

Each facility formed ergonomics committees comprised of leadership, engineers, mechanics, and key-decision makers. After completing the training for the Industrial Ergonomics software, they performed MSD risk assessments and identified improvement opportunities based on the output of a risk map with color-coded risk-potential indicators.

The Industrial Ergonomics software identifies high-risk activities in red, medium-risk in yellow, and low-risk in green. “Seeing a high-risk movement reduced to a low-risk movement was rewarding,” said Harper.

Being able to see the positive results in the system, and visible reduction in risk levels, engaged leaders and associates helped sustain the process to achieve these notable results.

  • Irvine, KY: OSHA claims reduced from 16 to 8 in 2022 (50% reduction)
  • Camden, TN: OSHA claims reduced from 27 in 2022 to 11 in 2023 (59% reduction)
  • Edmonton, KY: Set a record of 50 days without an OSHA recordable injury, two months into the program.

“Carhartt’s commitment to safety and the successful implementation of our Industrial Ergonomics solution demonstrates the power of proactive risk management in reducing workplace injuries,” said Matt Airhart, CEO, VelocityEHS. “Establishing a formal ergonomics management system and leveraging technology to guide you along the way is the best way to achieve desired outcomes and improve overall employee engagement, health, wellness and safety performance. It is ergonomics done right.”

The new 3D model for motion capture launches an era of enhanced risk assessment for musculoskeletal disorders, the leading cause of workplace injuries.

Chicago (July 10, 2024) – VelocityEHS®, the global leader in enterprise EHS & ESG software solutions, today launched the next generation of its patented and award-winning Industrial Ergonomics Solution, featuring the new 3-dimensional (3D) model for motion capture. The update utilizes cutting edge research, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and neural network technology to assess musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) risk in 3D with the highest accuracy and effectiveness in the market.

In 2018, Velocity acquired Humantech®, the leader in industrial ergonomics and pioneer of the industry’s first sensorless 2D motion capture technology. This transformation from a 2D to 3D model for motion capture breaks new ground in the battle against MSDs, the leading cause of workplace injuries, robbing people of their livelihoods and costing businesses billions of dollars a year.

“Your people work in a 3D world, your ergonomics solutions should too,” said Dr. Julia Penfield, VP of Research & Machine Learning at VelocityEHS. “The new 3D model for motion capture was purpose-built using our proprietary dataset to train the technology. Combining AI and ML capabilities with ergonomics expertise improves accuracy and reliability and enhances the efforts of experienced ergonomics professionals. Now ergonomics team members of all experience levels can quickly and easily achieve expert-level results.”

The new model is the culmination of years long collaboration between Machine Learning experts from Velocity and the University of Michigan, Rutgers University and the University of Toronto, biomechanical academic researchers from the University of Cincinnati, and Velocity’s team of the most trusted certified professional ergonomists (CPEs) in the industry. Bringing it to market involved:

  • Analyzing 500+ videos, 7 million images
  • 1000+ hours of manual testing for accuracy
  • Conducting quality review by Velocity’s 20+ certified professional ergonomists
  • Extensive real-world testing with customers

Modeling the movements of the human body in 3D means Velocity’s already best-in-class MSD risk assessment sets a new standard for quality and comprehensiveness. It incorporates the automated scoring of wrist postures, side bending, back twisting, and data for body regions that are blocked or obstructed from view. The new model was trained on an internally developed dataset of the most common occupation tasks, including assembly, lifting, lowering, pushing, and pulling.

“MSDs in the wrists are among the most common and costly. Accurately measuring this risk is difficult, even for trained ergonomists, and until now had to be done manually. Automating this process ensures consistently high-quality data and reduces the need for long hours of training your ergonomics team members to quantify difficult and highly variable tasks,” said Blake McGowan, CPE, and Solution Executive for Ergonomics at Velocity. “It is 50% more accurate at quantifying body segment angles than the previous version and captures 100% of data and scoring for elbows, shoulders, back, and neck, even when segments are temporarily hidden.”

Velocity’s update includes an Interactive Posture Risk Timeline that visualizes the moments of highest risk to ensure more effective analysis of the direct causes of MSD risk. Expertise embedded in the software helps users choose the right controls to address issues before they contribute to an MSD. Now EHS managers and ergonomics teams can more efficiently and effectively engage employees in the job improvement process and ensure accountability for implementing corrective actions.

“If a company is serious about reducing MSD risk, this is where you start,” said Matt Airhart, CEO of Velocity. “Our first 2D model allowed customers to assess MSD risk at scale using AI Computer Vision, so you could identify and mitigate risk faster and more accurately than ever before. This update blows our first iteration away. For people on the front lines, it has the potential to be life changing.”

Current Velocity Ergonomics customers will have the same easy work flow they are accustomed to, with the updates taking effect automatically. Users simply upload a video of a worker doing a task, taken with any digital device, and the software takes care of the rest.

Chicago (May 14, 2024) – VelocityEHS®, the global leader in enterprise EHS & ESG software solutions, has recently been awarded five patents by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for its pioneering use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to help prevent workplace injuries and incidents. The company also published two scientific papers detailing its innovations in the prestigious journal Nature.

Innovations covered in this latest round of patents will help EHS professionals reduce musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and chemical risks and strengthen incident prevention. The new AI/ML capabilities empower companies to advance their EHS activities along the EHS maturity curve, which moves from reactive -> preventative -> proactive -> predictive, with increasing efficiency and effectiveness.

“While patents and peer recognition are gratifying, our AI team’s driving force is the chance to protect workers and save lives,” said Dr. Julia Penfield, VP of Research & Machine Learning at VelocityEHS. “Most of these innovations are commercialized already or launching soon. Collectively, they have the potential to significantly reduce injuries, lost productivity and related costs for our customers.”

Papers Published in Nature

Nature published its first VelocityEHS paper, titled A Machine Learning driven automated system for safety data sheet indexing, in February. Authored by Aatish Suman, Misbah Khan, Veeru Talreja, Julia Penfield, & Stephanie Crowell, it covers the automation of indexing chemical information from SDSs using ML and natural language processing (NLP), as detailed in recent patents.

A second Velocity paper was published by Nature in April, titled Automatic identification of incidents involving potential serious injuries and fatalities (PSIF). Authored by Pulkit Parikh, Julia Penfield & Marc Juaire, the paper proposes the first ML system for automating the critical task of PSIF identification from incident data to enable better risk assessment and prevention of serious workplace incidents.

“Our team’s pace of innovation is accelerating thanks to the scale of our investment into AI and close collaboration with customers and Velocity’s team of certified EHS experts,” said Matt Airhart, CEO of VelocityEHS. “On the customer front, we are grateful for the quality of our research partners and humbled by their trust in us and our R&D team. This work doesn’t happen without them.”

Patent Awards

Velocity was awarded three patents on the ergonomics side, including two for new methods of delivering root-cause analysis and controls, and one with the use of natural language processing. A third patent was for the use of computer vision to determine force exertions as part of an ergonomics risk assessment, which can be done simply by uploading a video taken with mobile device of a worker performing a task.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in the U.S. alone, work-related MSDs account for one-third of non-fatal occupational injuries.

Two more patents were awarded for Velocity’s groundbreaking method of indexing and extracting information from digital records. Applicable against a wide range of EHS problems, these innovations enable users to harvest key data that would be too time-consuming and costly for organizations to collect manually, such as the indexing and extraction of chemical ingredient information from safety data sheets (SDSs).

A key benefit of indexing with AI is scalability, which is required for driving maturity and performance in programs that depend on SDS content, such as green chemistry and industrial hygiene qualitative exposure assessments.

Velocity also received top scores for its emissions factor storage functionality, including its ability to record changes in a version-controlled library and flexibility in adding/modifying emission factors.

“It’s no surprise that ESG continues to dominate on the enterprise level, but what’s interesting is how quickly it has pushed into the mid-market space,” said Matt Airhart, President of VelocityEHS. “The tracking of Scope 1-3 emissions has become table stakes for any organization looking to participate in the global marketplace. Velocity’s best-in-class carbon management and reporting capabilities gives every company the opportunity to secure a seat at the table.”

According to the Verdantix, Green Quadrant: Enterprise Carbon Management Report (November 30, 2023), Velocity is, “well-suited for mid-market industrial buyers seeking unified management across carbon management, ESG and EHS management as the firm has a network of solutions offering customers increased flexibility.”

Analyst Report highlights Velocity’s investment in artificial intelligence & machine learning, as well as strengths in chemical management, management of change, incident and risk management.

Chicago (November 20, 2023) – VelocityEHS®, the global leader in enterprise EHS & ESG software solutions, announced that it has once again been named a Leader by the London-based independent analyst firm Verdantix in its second Green Quadrant (GQ) for Process Safety Management (PSM) Software. PSM is one of the many capabilities of the award-winning VelocityEHS Accelerate® Platform.

The analysis reviewed 15 vendors and placed Velocity in the leader quadrant for its highly capable PSM platform and “market leading” Chemical Management and Management of Change capabilities (MOC).

“Process Safety Management is a massive responsibility. If you are involved in PSM, then you know how absolutely critical it is to have the right tools at your fingertips to guide efforts and keep people organized,” said Matt Airhart, President of VelocityEHS. “Delivering on PSM is a point of pride for Velocity. That’s reflected in our top category scores in this GQ for Chemical Management and MOC, and in our investment in ActiveEHS® — our proprietary methodology for combining the domain expertise of certified EHS professionals with AI & machine learning to help non-experts achieve expert-level results.”

According to the Verdantix, Green Quadrant: Process Safety Management Report (November 20, 2023) Velocity, “provides strong scalability and interconnectivity across its own PSM modules, favouring small configurations over broad process augmentation. This is an attractive trait for corporates looking to deploy interconnected PSM functionality without the huge implementation effort.”

The report also found that Velocity provided a single source of truth for hazardous chemical and operational safety risks for customers like DynoNobel and Sasol by tying together its PSM suite with robust data dashboarding and visualization tools.

In addition to the PSM GQ, Velocity has been named a leader in recent Verdantix Green Quadrant Reports for ESG, Carbon Management, EHS, and EHS specifically for mid-market companies.

VelocityEHS Awarded Two Patents for AI and Machine Learning

Chicago (October 26, 2023) – VelocityEHS®, the global leader in enterprise EHS & ESG software solutions, announced today that it has been granted two patents by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for its groundbreaking use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The patents demonstrate the company’s leadership in developing EHS & ESG technology to drive operational excellence.

Green Chemistry Patent

With the first patent, the USPTO recognized Velocity’s innovative use of machine learning (ML), in particular natural language processing (NLP), in its Green Chemistry capability to automate the indexing and extraction of chemical ingredient information from safety data sheets (SDSs). Harvesting this data manually is too costly and error-prone for many organizations, meaning they operate without visibility into their full chemical exposure.

AI-driven ingredient indexing is cost efficient, near real-time and more accurate than current human based indexing methods. It empowers organizations of all sizes to take advantage of green chemistry principles such as identifying, prioritizing, and addressing the chemicals most likely to cause harm, and to control the influx of new hazardous chemicals into their facilities.

Velocity now empowers organizations of all sizes and maturity levels to capitalize on green chemical management principles to create workplaces that are safer and more sustainable.

Ergonomics Patent

The second patent recognizes the company’s use of ML, in particular Computer Vision (CV) and NLP, in its Industrial Ergonomics Solution to address musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), the leading cause of workplace injuries, costing employers billions of dollars a year. By using AI to identify MSD risk root causes and recommend risk control actions, Velocity empowers companies to make expert ergonomics guidance available to every employee and combat MSDs across the entire organization.

“For companies serious about safety, sustainability and resilience, these real-world AI applications of ML and NLP bring immediate value. On the VelocityEHS Accelerate® Platform, they have the potential to impact the wellbeing of millions of workers,” said Dr. Julia Penfield, Associate Vice President of Machine Learning. “It’s all part of our ActiveEHS® offering, which embeds the expertise of Velocity’s certified EHS professionals into our software and amplifies it with AI to help non-experts achieve expert level results.”

“Investor interest in ESG is fueling a generational transformation of EHS & sustainability. Velocity’s investment in AI and R&D, the largest in the industry, is similarly revolutionizing the speed and effectiveness by which companies can respond to ESG pressures and responsibilities,” said Matt Airhart, President of VelocityEHS. “Adding these patented innovations to the Accelerate® Platform’s already cutting-edge capabilities is just the start. We have many more game-changers in the R&D pipeline.”

The Accelerate Platform consists of seven best-in-class solutions covering Safety, Industrial Ergonomics, Control of Work, Health, ESG, Environmental Compliance and Operational Risk. For more information about VelocityEHS and its complete award-winning software solutions, visit www.EHS.com.
